Update on the children’s emergency and trauma department

Thanks to your generous support, University Hospital Southampton has been able to begin  construction of the new Children’s Emergency and Trauma Department (CETD), and as a result, phase one of the build has been completed and is in use (see photos above).

Although the completion of this initial phase has already helped us save lives, we have incurred some building delays and wanted to keep you informed about them.

Towards the end of 2018, the Trust saw an unprecedented level of demand for adult and children’s emergency services and this, alongside the usual winter pressures meant that building works were paused until the demand for the service was reduced, in order for us to be able to deliver the best possible care to our young patients. These pressures also highlighted the need to review the planned phasing for the build.

An area that was reviewed, was the timeline for the works to construct a new resuscitation area - an area that benefits both children and adults. A decision was made to bring the construction of this area forward so that we can best meet the increase in demand for this service. This means that the completion of the new CETD has been postponed as a result.

Works are continuing on the build for the new CETD department and phase two, the construction of the Children’s entrance, will be completed at the end of 2019, with the final phase three of the Children’s waiting area, in spring 2020.

We would like to express our sincere thanks for all your support in enabling us to build this much needed department, and look forward to announcing completion dates with you soon.
