Trio to take on half marathon

A family from Hedge End are hoping to go the extra-mile to raise money and awareness for the Cardiac High Dependency Unit at Southampton General Hospital.  Three brothers from the Smith family, Kevin (37), Dan (34) and Matt (22) are planning to run the Southampton Half Marathon in April after their father Bryan (67) suffered a major heart attack in November of last year.

Bryan was rushed to Southampton General and underwent emergency heart surgery to save his life.   The care and support he and the family received in the Cardiac High Dependency Unit has prompted his sons to sign up for the 13.1 mile course around the city.

Bryan’s wife and the trios mum, June Smith is incredibly proud of her sons said:

“It was an awful few weeks when Bry was in hospital but we pulled together as a family and got through it.  The care and support we received from the staff at the general was nothing short of amazing.  The boys wanted to give something back to thank the nurses so came up with the idea of all running the half marathon together.”

Bryan is extremely grateful for the care he received and is recovering well from a quintuple heart bypass operation.  He told us:

“I think what the lads are doing is fantastic – I just wish I could have joined them! They are all big Saints fans and I know they are looking forward to running past St Mary’s, we’ll be there to cheer them on! If this small gesture can raise some much needed funds and awareness for Southampton Hospital Charity then it will be worth every step.”

Suzie Simmons, fundraising manager, comments:

“The Cardiac High Dependency Unit looks after patients who are seriously ill with heart or lung problems – that’s up to eight people a day from just our operating theatres. We are so thankful to the Smith family for raising money for Southampton Hospital Charity. Without our fundraisers, we couldn’t provide the world-class treatment and equipment that our hospitals give to our patients every day.”
